POSITION SUMMARY
The Professional Development Specialist-Glycemic Control has a two-tiered approach to their job, the first is a professional development and training-focused approach and the second is a patient-focused approach. To be successful in this role, an employee must balance both roles.
In the professional development role they will be responsible for hospital wide training, implementation and monitoring of Glycemic Control Standards on patient care units. This will include nursing documentation, Insulin protocols and the GlucoStabilizer Insulin Dosing software. The Specialist is responsible for learning needs assessment of staff, program development and implementation of glycemic control educational programs.
The position involves complete process revision and expansion of the Glycemic Control program into Preadmission Testing, Perioperative Care, the Operating Room, Post Anesthesia Care units and Labor and Delivery.
In the patient-focused role they facilitate proper blood glucose control of inpatients and management of complex diabetes cases. Responsibilities include evaluating glucose results of individual patients over time, by nursing units and by facility using the RALS Tight Glucose Control graphical data and daily screening reports. This involves evaluating and trending incidences of severe hypoglycemia, hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia and abnormal glucose values and intervening with physicians and nursing staff to promote appropriate insulin protocol use. Using the AACE/ADA Consensus Standards, the Professional Development Specialist will identify patients requiring Insulin or hypoglycemic medication adjustment, recommend therapy changes to the physician and monitor response to therapy.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
1. Master's degree in Nutrition or Nursing preferred. Applicants with Pharm D or Masters degree in Physical
Therapy are also eligible.
2. Bachelor's degree in Nutrition or Dietetics, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing granted by a U.S. regionally
accredited college or university.
3. A minimum of four years clinical experience is preferred.
4. Registered Dietitian, Registered Nurse, Registered Pharmacist or Registered Physical Therapist required.
5. Certified Diabetes Educator preferred.
6. National Certification as a Diabetes Educator (CDE) or Board Certification in Advanced Diabetes Management
(BC-ADM) to be obtained within second year of employment. Completion of American Association of Diabetes
Educators Core Concepts Course and experience under supervision is acceptable for the first year of
employment.
7. Comprehensive knowledge and application of therapy for treatment of diabetes and its complications.
8. Critical thinking to integrate facts, informed opinions, active listening, and observations.
9. Decision making, problem solving and collaboration.
10. Excellent counseling skills and the ability to relate to a multi-ethnic community and varied learning levels.
11. Strong interpersonal skills to establish productive working relationships with multidisciplinary team and support
services.
12. Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form to patients, public, hospital staff, and
physicians.
13. Ability to function independently on patient care units and with outpatients.
14. Serves as a professional practice role model and mentor.
